Welcome to the first installment of Grubguy's top spots! I'll be periodically posting reviews about various Portland eateries which I feel are worth pointing out. I hope to highlight unique spots which may not be well known, and I consider practically a hidden treasure. Places which convey something unique, or just plain great service and food worth talking about.

M&M's Corner Cafe

My current top spot is M&M's café located in NorthEast Portland. I've been going here for several months now and have always been happy with the food and individual service I've received from their friendly staff and owners.

M&M is a small airy café with nice booths, large windows and a clean airy feeling. This small café will definitely bring the feeling of home to your stomach. The owner of M&M's works hard at making sure that your happy with your meal and regularly offers samples of their latest and greatest right off the stove. All their food is fresh and tastes like home cooking right from mom.

One of the things I find unique about their menu is that it contains no french fries. That's right, their version of french fries is a red potato home fries, a southern style hash brown. A lot more filling, a lot better for you too. This just reinforces the feeling of home style breakfast cooking which shines through as you browse their menu of tasty items. Their burgers and sandwiches come with these home fries, potato salad, pasta salad, cup of soup or lettuce salad. They also offer a terrific all day breakfast menu featuring hot cakes, omelets and some skillet options that make for a great breakfast spot.

The service here may be a bit slow sometimes, but it's definitely worth the wait. So if you're in a big hurry, take a deep breath, because they cook things the right way here. You are presented with large portions of home cooking that will leave you full and content. So if you're ready for honest to goodness home cooking give M&M's Corner Cafe a try.

Be sure to check the hours because they're not open on Mondays or Tuesdays or past 2pm.
